Tularemia tends to localize in the regional lymph nodes because infection usually enters through a skin breach or insect bite and drains via the lymphatic system to the nearest node. There, the bacteria are taken up by macrophages and trigger localized lymphadenitis, which is most characteristic in the ulceroglandular form (a skin lesion with tender swollen nodes in the draining basin).
